"E-Auction" is an online platform that will allow members of the public to bid for Ordinary Vehicle Registration Marks (VRMs) requiring a deposit of $1,000 (not Ordinary VRMs prefixed with the letters “HK” and “XX”) through a computer or mobile device. Applicants who have submitted a deposit of $1,000 to reserve a vehicle registration mark for auction should register as an "E-Auction"user and participate in the online auction. Their reserved registration marks may be sold to other bidders at the reserve price if otherwise.

Members of the public can register by using “iAM Smart+” or an email address and then log in to "E-Auction" to participate in real-time auctions. Those registered using an email address will be required to sign to confirm the bid in an online auction with a digital signature supported by a personal or organisational digital certificate. Successful bidders can make payment of auction prices through "E-Auction" by various means including credit card, PPS or FPS. "E-Auction" will also provide auction information, including the auction schedule, registration marks to be auctioned, auction procedures and bidding and payment notifications.

User registration arrangements

  • Members of the public should register as an "E-Auction" user by “iAM Smart+”equipped with the digital signing function; or by using a valid digital certificate and an email address upon completion of identity verification.
  • Registered “iAM Smart” users should provide their Hong Kong identity card number, while non-Hong Kong residents who are not "iAM Smart" users should provide the number of their passport or other identification documents.

Category of VRMs put up for E-Auction

  • The "E-Auction" will only be applicable to Ordinary VRMs. The TD will announce details of the online auction sessions in advance through the "E-Auction" website and prevailing channels including press releases and newspaper advertisements; and each registered user will receive such information by email.
  • Auctions for VRMs with "HK" or "XX" as a prefix, special VRMs and personalised VRMs will continue to be carried out through physical auctions by bidding paddles and their announcement arrangements remain unchanged.
