To be qualified as a registered electrical contractor, an applicant must –

  1. employ at least one registered electrical worker; or
  2. if the applicant is an individual, he/she must be a registered electrical worker; or
  3. if the applicant is a partnership, at least one of the partners must be a registered electrical worker.

The procedures for application are listed below. Renewal applications must be made at least 1 month before and no earlier than 4 months before the expiry date.

Supporting documents
  • Copy of Business Registration Certificate (with validity not less than 1 month);
  • Copies of the certificates of registration of the registered electrical workers;
  • Documentary proof of the employment of the registered electrical workers (if applicable); and
  • If the applicant is not the owner or director of the contractor, the applicant is required to submit the original of an authorisation letter signed by the owner or director.
     
Fee

The application fee is $855. The paid application fee will not be refunded regardless of the result of application.

  • In person to the EMSD Registration and Permit Office, or drop the application into the drop-in box located in EMSD HQs
  • By post to the EMSD Registration and Permit Office
  • Online submission (Password and personal digital certificate are required)

(Cheques, Draft and Cashier Orders should be made payable to the ‘The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’ and crossed. If an application is made online, please send the crossed cheque, draft, cashier orders to EMSD by post.)
 

Validity
  • 3 years
  • For renewal applications, the new certificate will be effective on the expiry date of the old certificate
     
Processing time

Upon receipt of all required documents and application fee, about 13 working days
 

How to obtain the certificate

Through registered mail to the correspondence address of the applicant


After successful registration, a registered electrical contractor should display in a prominent place at his/her principal place of business the original certificate of registration. A copy of the certificate issued by the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services should also be displayed at each of his/her other places of business.
