Renewal applications must be made at least 1 month before and no earlier than 4 months before the expiry date.

Renewal application submitted after the expiry date of the original registration will be treated as a new registration application, which will be assessed in accordance with the statutory requirements at the time of receiving such application. If the applicant cannot fulfil the registration requirements at that time (including recognized academic qualifications and electrical work experience), the application would be rejected regardless of the previous registration history of the applicant, and the application fee will be not be refunded.

The procedures for renewal applications are as follows -

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Scheme for Registered Electrical Worker (REW)

With effect from 1 January 2012, REWs applying for registration renewal will be required to have completed two modules of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training, namely (1) Legislative and Safety Requirements; and (2) Technical Knowledge, before submitting the application. When receiving the renewal application from REW, EMSD will verify his CPD training record before processing the renewal application. For details of CPD scheme, please click here.


Form 8 - New/Renewal/Change of Grade of Electrical Work Application

Supporting documents

  • Copy of Hong Kong Identity Card/travel document;
  • A recent colour photograph with plain white background.

For renewal application submitted after expiry of the original registration, copy of documentary proofs for all academic qualification, training/apprenticeship and working experience are required.


The application fee is $475. The paid application fee will not be refunded regardless of the result of application.

Means of submission

  • In person to the EMSD Customer Service Offices, or drop the application into the drop-in box located in EMSD HQs
  • By post to the EMSD Customer Services Offices
  • Online submission (Password and personal digital certificate are required)

  • Online application: PPS, online banking payment, general demand note, crossed cheque, draft, cashier orders

(Cheques, Draft and Cashier Orders should be made payable to ‘The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’ and crossed. If an application is made online, please send the crossed cheque, draft, cashier orders to EMSD by post.)
